Holidays

Just a short sum up of the holidays that passed by in the last couple of weeks …

Having left Geneva on Dec 19th I dropped Johanna and Tom somewhere north of Frankfurt and after a nice evening, a good night’s sleep I continued towards Berlin …

During the days before Christmas I (unfortunately) entered the Christmas shopping world, which immediately took away the last bit of joyful anticipation towards the holidays!

Anyway after these trouble I tried to enjoy my first appointment free Chistmas eve and almost failed since I had to notice (for the first time) that shops close at times like 13h or 15h on that day … which is bad in case you need something urgently at about 18h …
Thanks to the Indian’s (who do not celebrate at this day) we managed to fill up my new dehydrating machine :) with fresh fruits and vegies in the end.

The rest of the holidays was quite relaxing and nearly as expected …

After this trouble we (being seven and a half friend and me) drove out to the Swedish outback to spend a couple of days, including New Year’s Eve, in a hut (thanks to Esben, greetz).
Besides some troubles with fuses, missing heating, dead animals and overflowing shit-tanks everything went well and we had a great time …

And now I am back for work in Zeuthen (the small village close to Berlin) …

Going offline

Walking through CERN these days is extremely weired … there is hardly anyone left!
The LHC being on hold and now even the detectors being switched off more or less completely there is not much to do for many of us … even though I really can use some quiet-time to fetch up with things and to prepare my departure *sadness and happyness though*.
On Friday 5:30 pm CERN will be closed for holidays and the heating as well as a large fraction of the computers and hardware will be shut down until beginning of January …

Finally some skiing

Yesterday, I finally managed to go skiing (or better snowboarding) for once this year (and unfortunately maybe also for this season).
I went to Les Diablerets with some friends (greetz) and spent a whole day in the boots … ;)
Great fun even though we left Geneva at about 6:30 am!
We rounded off the day with a nice dinner (actually I had another one with my roomies afterwards … also very nice).

Double Fondue and the Escalade

This weekend was kind of exhausting … it started with cheese fondue at Regina’s on Friday (and cheese fondue is no fun … it tough work), continued with turkey-shopping for Wednesday’s Christmas Party and watching some friends running on the Escalade in Geneva and another cheese fondue at Daniel’s (the was a little lack of coordination … apparently) and ws rounded of with my shift this morning (7h-15h) and some korean food (which I am going to get in about two hours) …
all really nice, but usually just too much … puh …

LHC Status

After all the silence about the current status of the LHC, finally the management itself made some pictures of the incident public (even though it seem to have been by accident and has now been protected).
In a talk by the Director General himself [link] (now protected) some pictures indicate the damage caused by the incident on September 19th.
