What a week(end)

Quite an interesting week(end) that just ended. Besides the follow-up work for the CERN Open Days (deciding in winners, cleaning up, preparing shipments, etc.), I was preparing the Kulturnatten (open days) event of the particle physics group at the Niels Bohr Institute. Unfortunately the central organisation did not spend as much time thinking about the event as we did. Anyways, I think we made the best out of it and it actually went quite well. We had one auditorium with usual stuff like posters, videos and the LEGO models, plus our new self-made cloud chamber, which worked like charm for several hours. I spent almost four hours straight giving talks about ATLAS and more. A fact my voice seems to thank me for now :(

That done, and after only three and a half hours of sleep, we had the 2013 Fotohalbmarathon coming up on Saturday. This year we ended up with in total twelve teams taking part in the end. Some entered late, some had to cancel on short notice. But it’s a nice number, and people seemed to have enjoyed it.

After that, I started preparing my trip to Manchester, which I am going to start in only a few hours. Once more, I had to disassemble and pack the original Copenhagen LEGO model and I will take it on the plane in a bit.

Together with some people from Manchester, I will rebuild it tomorrow and on Wednesday non other than Nobel Prize winner Peter Higgs is going to sign it :)
I am admittedly quite excited :)

Laurent @ Culture Box

It’s been several years after his last appearance at Culture Box in Copenhagen and it’s been several months since I managed to see Laurent last time. So about time for both of us ;)

And what should I say … it was great!
After three hours of warm-up by the residents, Laurent started at 2am and continued until 6am.

Certainly long enough to make my knees hurt for the rest of the weekend. The good kinda pain though ;)

Honour & Glory – UEFA Women’s Championship

The tournament itself is over and so is the Honour & Glory competition.

This time we had twelve participants and I cannot say I don’t like the final result ;)
Congratulations to Craig and Kristian (and the random numbers) for the places!
Along with loads of Honour & Glory, the prizes will be handed over soon!

Thanks everyone for taking part! See you for the next event (probably FIFA World Cup 2014)!

Honour & Glory – UEFA 2012

The group phase has finished: time for a little resumé!

It seems like my web site features a security hole and Troels has found it. Jokes aside, it’s hard not to notice his slight dominance in this year’s UEFA betting game. After his 17th and 6th place in UEFA 2008 and FIFA 2010, respectively: quite an improvement! I know that the one that laughs last, laughs loudest; but the rest of the field, including titleholder Simon, has to improve significantly to beat Troels’ lead. Well actually, there is already now some who do not have to think about a strategy to beat him anymore. Just after the group phase, this is actually a novelty for Honour & Glory football betting. Besides that, second and third place are still possible to reach for everyone in the field, though some might have to fight harder than others. Another novum is the fact that Troels continues to score on average more than one point per match (actually 1.46). And just to put out another name in this resumé, Basti managed to get the stage win for having the most correct betting tendencies in a row (seven) after the group phase.

ATLAS model

Today I finally finished the video construction manual for the ATLAS brick model. After more than a month and uncounted hours in hot spotlights I finally uploaded all episodes today. All Full HD video clips along with some more instructions, tips and hints for the build can be found at:

http://atlas-model.mehlhase.info.

In addition I also created a time-lapse movie (see below) showing both the construction of the second ATLAS brick model, here at NBI, and the construction of ATLAS, down in the cavern in Geneva.
