Good end for a (very) long day

After the short night, the morning shift at the pixel desk and the detector meeting I went out to Fort l’Ecluse to chain myself to the mountain and climb some rocks … the Ferrata there is a nice and relaxing ending for a nice day …

And now I need my bed …

Science & Fiction

Had a bit of both today … after having had a short glimps of the real ATLAS detector I went to see the fiction version of it in the new Angels and Demons movie in theatres.
Quite a contrast I have to say …
But despite the mixed-up science especially in the beginning (featuring actors like ATLAS, CERN, LHC, …) … it is quite a nice movie …
I only fear a little that the outreach committees in particle physics might have a bit more work during the upcoming weeks …
to helps those guys here’s two enlightening links

Statistics played a trick on me

Just came back from the dosimetry service at CERN, where I finally got my dosimeter!
Actually I got five !!! Yeah five !!! Cause apparently statistics played a trick on me today.
Out of the ten percent of chips that fail (by definition somehow) I got four IN A ROW.
How unlikely is that … and guess what, you have to wait four to five minutes after each new chip to get registered in the data base … so over the time I became good friends with the guy at the counter ;)

First CERN Guide Tour

Just finished my first own CERN Guide tour … some people, mainly trainees, from the Swiss branch of a big pharma company somewhere in the ‘German’ speaking part of Switzerland had the “pleasure” (original quote :) ) to be touring the LHCb exhibition and the Delphi under ground area with me … was quite fun!
And there is more to come I guess/think/hope …
