The good side…

After having three (kind of aweful) days in the experimental hall at around 35 degrees, we now started enjoying the stay in switzerland a bit. On sunday we went to a local swimming pool and enjoyed the beautiful weather… Yesterday we began to write our report on the experiments we’ve done in the first days and we got invited to dinner by the danish head of PSI. Our teacher payed for the drinks, because he lost a bet… and we spent the evening in the penthouse flat of that danish guy, having drinks and snacks (btw. thank you very much again). Then we drove back to PSI with seven people in a five person car… Tomorrow we’ll have a guided tour at the high energy part of the PSI, go to the visitors center and probably get a sneak peek at the synchrotron (SLS)…

The life of a physicist…

After deciding to go to Germany one day earlier than planed and arriving at 5am, after a 7h drive, I had the amzing amount of 4h of sleep. After some dinner with my parents, meeting some friends, incl. Julie and going to bed at 1am I again had a great night (3h). Because I had to get up at 4am to catch my plain to Basel (CH) at 6h40am.
Enjoying my plesent flight next to some smelly girls, that probably demostrated against globalization the whole night by drinking beer, I toke the train to Brugg (CH) and waited for the rest of the group, lying around in the sun at 34 degrees. Then we took the Postbus to Villingen/PSI (CH) and checked in to our rooms in the hostel at PSI. After a first introduction, a security exam and getting some radiation batches we immediately started our first experiment using the RITA2 instrument. It was fun and the scenery is quite impressive, with all that huge machines. Not so funny was the fact that it lasted until 2am the next morning….
So again another greate night… anyway.
At least today we could sleep until 10am (almost 8h)…
And now we’re back at the machine looking at out over-night-scan-data and doing some new experiments…
I just have some minutes free, so that’s why I’m writing…

Slow progress…

After having some trouble with the payment of my travels during the summer now everything seems to be somehow organized… even if I still don’t know how I’ll get the money back I just bought tickets for the flight Berlin-Basel and return. Which means I’m more or less defenitly going to PSI. Even if I’m having some problems in making the reports on time… Anyway that’s of course not the only thing I have to do in the last days, so it’s kind of stressful these days…

New home in france

It’s done. I got the confirmation that I’ll get a room in a recently restored house, together with two other students and a nice kitchen/bathroom. (I guess everything will be better than in CPH… anyway)
My new room will be close behind the border, a little bit north of CERN. The town is called Versonnex and has the funny postcode 01210 (isn’t it lovely… anyway).
So I’m looking forward to July…

The trouble of finding an appartment and plans for the summer

First of all some good news according to my plans of going to CERN this summer… I’m definitely going! The bad news… I have to find an appartment that’s affordable, cause all the rooms in the CERN-hostels are taken by the Summerstudents. And looking at the prizes of accomodation in and around Geneva is a pain in the … But finally I have found two places that would be acceptable! I hope I’ll get accepted on Friday!? If that works out I’ll still have some of the money I’ll get left… which means that I could actually live without a loss. Yeeha!
So what are the exact plans:
I’ll go to PSI in the end of June (22nd-29th) then return to Berlin for two days, visit my sister in Frankfurt and then go to CERN from July 4th to September 9th. During this time I might visit some friends working on a vineyard near Aix en Provence (greetz to Barry and Richard) for a weekend and definitly a friend living in Geneva (greetz to Lorric). After my stay at CERN I’ll hopefully visit another friend in Aix en Provence (greetz to Julie) for some days. We’ll see…
If someone wants to visit me just let me know… dependent on the room I’ll get I might have a place to sleep?! Otherwise there is a YouthHostel in Geneva. Anyway Easyjet is flying from Berlin to Geneva!
