ATLAS LEGO models

In fall 2011, I have designed a model of the ATLAS experiment made entirely of standard LEGO bricks.
It illustrates all details, from the muon and magnet system to the innermost pixel detector and is a great eye-catcher for all generations. Here’s some key features:

  • ATLAS LEGO modelabout 9500 pieces
  • roughly 1:50 in scale
(close to scale with the LEGO man)
  • material cost of about 2000 Euros
(payed by the high energy physics group at the Niels Bohr Institute)
  • about 1 m x 0.5 m x 0.5 m in size
  • approximately 33 hours construction time
(spread out over several weekends and after hours)
  • around 48 hours to build the 3D model
    (a one-timer though)

As a follow up to the 1:50 model, I also designed a smaller and cheaper miniature model in LEGO bricks.
Though it does not illustrate all details, the key features of ATLAS are visible. Here’s some key features:

  • ATLAS LEGO mini model560 pieces
  • roughly 1:2000 in scale
  • material cost of about 75 Euros
  • about 22 cm x 11 cm x 11 cm in size
  • approximately 90 minutes construction time
  • around 7 hours to build the 3D model
    (a one-timer though)

More details, images, videos, a media coverage overview and the video construction manual can be found at:
http://www.build-your-own-particle-detector.org/

Thanks a lot to Jørgen Beck Hansen and Peter Rosendahl for some initial thoughts on the model, to the NBI workshop at Rockefeller for the showcase and to the high energy physics group in general for financing this idea.

LEGO is a trademark of the LEGO Group.

O’zapft is

After spending yet another great time in the beautiful city of Copenhagen, the time has come to say good bye. There have been a few ideas, even fewer possibilities and finally only one decision. And … tada, the next step in my/our life will be the capital of Bavaria, Munich.

The LMU Munich has kindly offered me a position as a lecturer (Akademischer Rat) working on the ATLAS Experiment for the next three years (with the option of six years in total), which I just accepted.

So if all the bureaucracy doesn’t kill me/us on the way and we manage to find a place to stay in time, we’ll be in town by the 1st of April 2014.

When I am done rearranging my web site, the Copenhagen Guest Couch will (hopefully) be transformed into a Munich Guest Couch, of course.

Outreach / Public Engagement

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein

To convince more and more people of the beauty of physics and the world in general, I got myself involved in several activities engaging the public. A selection of projects / events, where I took (will take) part in the organisation and/or realisation, are listed below.

From March 2018 to February 2022 I was elected Education & Outreach coordinator of the ATLAS Collaboration (two-year term; reelected until March 2022).

From February to November 2022, I was working as Outreach & Didactics Manager for the Munich Quantum Valley, where, since December 2022, I am the Head of Media Relations & Public Engagement.
