The giant awakes …
… and ATLAS has seen its first beam splash events. Or in other words beams are passing by the machine! Here’s a picture and an animation of two of the first events from last night …
Of course CERN has released an official press release on the restart of the LHC. They also offer a CERN twitter tweet now. For those you who care and know what it is. More footage (that will be kept updated) can be found on the ATLAS Event Display web page.
Just in case you don’t fully understand … this is quite exciting! At least for someone in the field of particle physics … and this is just the beginning (hopefully) … it’s gonna be great.
Going green
This weekend we decided to go a bit more green … we changed our electricity provider.
After some research (actually carried out by a friend of us), some thinking and some calculations we decided to invest a little extra in green energy.
And the provider of choice is … naturstrom.de!
Which apparently is as green as it gets in Germany.
In case you live in Germany an feel like changing as well … we can hook you up ;)
Weired physics
I almost forgot to give a little update on new things happening in my field … Holger B. Nielsen is back with some new/updated theories!
He made it into the NY Times and to Tagessschau.de
Lucky delay and another wedding
For the first time in my life I was extremely happy about a delayed plane. Returning from Perugia last Friday, it actually saved my day. With trains as well as bussed being delayed I only made it to the check-in at boarding time. Only by the fact that the plane had one hour delay anyways I got on it … puha!
With more than an hour delay I finally made it home at 1h30 next morning, leaving again at 8h30 for another of this year’s weddings (there were a couple of friends getting married this year).
Nice ceremony and party somewhere in the outback of North-East Germany.
