Another week in heaven

After my sister left I started the week with a meeting together with my supervisor from Copenhagen University, who had the great idea to put me on the speakers list for a meeting next friday… yeeha. Anyway… so I had to get started with my stuff, which actually worked out after some difficulties. It’s still not enough for a presentation but I’ll figure out…
The weekend was kind of calm… I just spent most of the time sitting around in the sun, went to pubs, enjoyed a firealarm, got stopped by the police (with their hands on their guns…scary french), saw the “Fantastic Four” (which is actually not that fantastic) in cinema and… I dunno. I actually also worked a bit… on a weekend (is that place making me nerdy?)

First two weeks – a sum-up

Now it’s already two weeks since I’m here… in heaven.
And what have I done…? The first week was pretty calm… meaning that I couldn’t really get started because of some administration stuff. But since last Wednesday the real life started.
Usually I have three lectures a day from 9am to 12am and I start doing the real work until around 6pm.
Concerning the social life… summerschool just rules!
We have something alsmost every day/night… pubquiz, toga-party, hiking-tour, football-tournament, …
I had some great fun teaching Skat (a german card-game) to Kiwis and others…
Today my supervisor from Copenhagen arrived and we had a little meeting… where he just decided that I’ll have another little presentation next week… grant!
Anyway… yesterday I was having dinner together with my sister in one of the best places I’ve ever been… we had a big piece of raw beaf on our board and a small flame to grill it ourselves…
In addition to that we could see Geneva and the Mont Blanc out of the restaurant’s windows… quality!
Regarding CERN I actually havn’t seen that many of the really cool places because I’m still waiting for guides and/or access. But the place itself is an adventure… yeah!

btw my room/appartment is very nice… but still, I’m not using it, because I’m hardly there…
actually only to sleep. anyway!

In heaven

Finally I’m in heaven…
It took me amazing 9h to get there to realize that no one was there…
But one after the other:
Everything, besides to really amazing traffic jams, worked well until the french border. But then my little map-guide made me some difficulties to find my way… and of course I took the wrong one?! So I had to go back after some kilometers…
Being back on the right way I passed the beautiful city of Belfort, where I had to stop! The main part of this city is just one huge castle with gigantic walls around. Unfortunatly I lost the road while driving through the old part and climbing the main castle… I took me a while to get back to the right road. Getting closer to Geneva I decided to take the N5, which came out to have pros and cons, like all the things in the world…
But it’s a really beautiful road bending through the mountains… just the weather was a bit crappy, cause on some parts I couldn’t really see the road in front of my car!!
Anyway I made it to CERN at about 6h15pm…
The registration office just closed at 6pm and there was no one who could speak a word of english
*
A little comment at this point:
I didn’t expect a lot but I was still surprised to realize that it’s damn hard to find someone speaking english… especially if you’ve been to a country like Denmark where everyone speaks english… anyway!
*
After about an hour I could convince someone to let me in without a keycard… so I tried to meet someone I know in there. Which failed… of course!
The problem was that this guy had the key to my appartment…??
So I walked around and asked someone (who could speak english) to get me to the web, to check emails… which I did in the library! Having the right number to call I needed to ask again to get a call outside of CERN because my mobile battery was empty and so on…
Finally my supervisor fetched me up in front of CERN and showed me the way home. Today I actually got all the registration done and attended a security course… hoping to be able to access all areas… :-)
The rest of the day I tried to build up my new computer (I brought myself). Which didn’t succeed totally…now!
Tomorrow I’ll start the Summer School and probably start to work… ;-)
I’ll try to put some pictures on the web in the next days…

New home in france

It’s done. I got the confirmation that I’ll get a room in a recently restored house, together with two other students and a nice kitchen/bathroom. (I guess everything will be better than in CPH… anyway)
My new room will be close behind the border, a little bit north of CERN. The town is called Versonnex and has the funny postcode 01210 (isn’t it lovely… anyway).
So I’m looking forward to July…
