… and the “machine” I am working for (on the physics/software front) I got something to look at. I just got an email with a link to a webpage with some movies made out of webcam pictures taken in the cavern during the last months/years.
[edit] for those interested in other fancy stuff… I just got an email with this: The official Ravensburger ATLAS jigsaw puzzle: click here (pdf) and the ATLAS 3D viewer: click here (jpg)
Another great day is about to end… and?
After browsing the depths of CERN storage for suitable data I had the possibility to listen to a talk about the GRID. I got to know that dealing with new databases with sizes of not even Petabytes should not create any problems, computing power will never be a problem of non scentist… and that the GRID will never really help normal people :-( like the WWW did…
The I was listening to a (serious) lecture about timetravelling… yeah right timemachines and stuff. I even learned how to build one… jealous? You just need a wormhole (which is OF COURSE not a black hole) and an appropriate neutron star or if you prefer a black, at least sth very heavy. Bring it in the right position (look at picture, it’s selfexplaining) and of you go…
After all that leading edge science I felt a bit overqualified for my next mission…
The Vasketeria… not a place to eat, it’s a laundrette!
The place to meet people… bullshit!
The only one I met was a fat sweat dripping man, sneezing all the time… and it only cost 5 eur to get almost dry washed clother (please regocnize the irony)…
I just had my coffee/tea discussion session and some magazine reading/tea drinking afterwards… And guess what I found… yeah right the title!? Anyway… There is an article about stone skipping in Physics World (Volume 19 No 2 February 2006). Another proof that the possibilities for physicists are endless… Even though these guys were cheating by using an aluminium plate instead of a stone it’s quite impressive… In the end it all depends on angles and velocities. Read more at physicsweb.org. But another even more impressive thing (also mentioned in the article) is the fact that the current record for stone skipping lies at 40 bounces (Kurt Steiner, watch the video here). Read it and beat him!
I just arrived in Copenhagen yesterday evening and moved into my new room, which is very nice. So the start seems to better than the last time… ;-) Anyway… toady I already got my NBI ID and keys and stuff and a very long introduction on what to do during my stay… then it was already some hard work… cause there’s no time to waste… If I understood the mails I got right… then I even got my room in the student dorm… which is something great, cause it’s cheaper and so on… eventhough my new landlady is nice, the room is far to expensive for me… Anyway that’s the first entry for now… Some pictures will follow later… I just have to sort out some computer issues… Cheers
Today I made the final decision and rejected the job/master thesis offer I got from the surface science group in Berlin. Unfortunately I still don’t have a room in Copenhagen. But as I read some days ago: “Physicists have a genetic defect, which makes them way to optimistic”. So, here we go…
