Today I had another ‘Build Your Own Particle Detector’ event, for the first time at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich. With about 50 participants to the contest and tons of chats within the seven-hour event, not a bad day ;)
All designs can be found on the BYOPD event page.
Particle music
This week yet another particle physics related song was released. American singer-songwriter Howie Day made a cover of one of his songs at CERN.
And just for completeness, I added a few other CERN related songs/classics.
Salève
Just because it’s nice …
After a long day at ATLAS week, I managed to get up to Grand Piton at Salève yesterday evening. Unfortunately a bit hazy, but still a great view and dinner spot :)
Stable collisions 2017

Yesterday, ATLAS recorded its first 2017 events during stable beams conditions and thereby marked the beginning of physics data taking for this year, as was reported on ATLAS’ web site. Looking forward to another exciting year …
Bucharest
Just returned from a week in Bucharest at the ‘ATLAS Exotics and SUSY Joint Workshop’, which took place at the Ministry of Culture and had its conference dinner at the slightly oversized Palace of Parliament, depicted above. The latter holds some interesting records, e.g. as the world’s largest civilian building with an administrative function, the world’s most expensive administrative building and the world’s heaviest building!?
Anyways … the workshop was nice, the dinner was nice, my talk was nice ;) and Buchrest certainly interesting … which reminds me of an equally interesting article on Bucharest I read this week.
