Weltmaschine.de

Just on time for the LHC start-up the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in collaboration with the German institutes working on the LHC and it’s experiments launched a new website called Weltmaschine.de (only German though).

It is another piece of an outreach campaign that started with the very successful LHC-Train that was cruising the S-Train ring in Berlin for the Long Night of Science in June.
The Grand Finale is an exhibition in the so far unused subway station Bundestag in the period from October 15th to November 16th.

O2 World Soft Opening

Just returned from todays Soft Opening of the O2 World in Berlin, the new home of the local hockey and basketball team, the Eisbären Berlin and ALBA Berlin, respectively.
One day before the official start-up this venue was tested by hosting a friendly between an O2 World OldStars team and a Gazprom Allstars team. The OldStars team partially consisting of former Einbären player and/or Eisbären officials lost in 5:0 game against the Russian selection.
The venue is quite nice, but could certainly need some improvements … e.g. in DJ Cool, the local music responsible!

Weekend – NY Style

After my little ~3000 km road trip starting in Chicago I finally arrived in New York to spend the weekend here …
I started the weekend with a nice little walk from 103rd down to Battery Park passing by almost all important sights in Manhatten …
continued with a long walk through Brooklyn and some more time in Manhatten on Saturday …
and finished up with a Yankees game (I happened to pass by and luckely got one of the returned tickets, they actually lost against the team of the previous city on my trip, the Toronto Blue Jays), a Bronx walk today and dinner at 6th&53rd today …
Queens and Staten Island will have to wait until next time I guess …

But as most people would agree, it’s a nice city … even though I was not too overwhelmed after seeing Chicago and Toronto before … ;)

btw … it was just approx. 53.300 people in the Yankee arena.

Hiroshi Sugimoto Retrospective

This weekend I’ve been to the National Gallery in Berlin to visit the ‘Hiroshi Sugimoto Retrospective’ which is on these days …
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a japanese photographer who does mostly black’n’white shots!
Quite some nice pictures he has done … I guess I liked the ‘Conceptual Forms’, the ‘Lightning Fields’ and the long-time exposure ‘Theaters’ the most!

Have a look at his webpage here: www.sugimotohiroshi.com

Science Night and The LHC Express

Yesterday (June 14th 2008) I was guide in the LHC Express at the Science Night in Berlin.
The LHC Express was a pimped city train (S-Bahn) that was circling the city ring from about 16h00 till 1h00. After my three hours shift, explaining the LHC and it’s connected experiments as well as the physics behind all this to the visitors/public, I had problems speaking …
With some minor issues/problems/difficulties I still think it was a big success.
