Iceland 2023

A little roadtrip and picture diary of our Iceland trip in August 2023.
Until and including Egilsstaðir we drove a Dacia Duster, which then had to be changed to a Toyota Landcruiser due to issues with the first car.

Some more details and captions might follow at some point .. otherwise just ask me ;)

Seasonal subtenants – blue tits on the balcony

Today the last two blue tit youngsters left the birdhouse on our balcony.

After a somewhat depressing first attempt last year, with all eight youngsters dying, this time around the parent(s) managed to get at least two of initially eight youngsters till the end.
Today at around 8am and 11am they finally left our balcony house their parents have been setting up since the very end of March.

For those of you interested, there’s a more time-lapse and motion-detection clips in a YouTube playlist.

Holidays by the sea

I just returned from holidays at both the North and the Baltic Sea.
One week each in Garding on Eiderstedt and Fährdorf on Poel.

We had a very nice time watching the water come and go at the North Sea, walking the mud flats and dikes, taking a boat trip to see seals, porpoises and other animals living the sea, visiting the wonderful Multimar Wattforum and other nice places. Had some good food (lot’s of fish) and a lot of wind and quite a bit of rain.

On Poel the weather changed for the better and we had beach time, sand-castle (or figures) building, paddling tours on the Breitling (Bay of Wismar) and lot’s of other things.

Here’s a few pictures from both seas, some of which also made it to my gallery.

Open Day & Fotohalbmarathon

Wow … what a weekend. After returning from the LHC LLP Workshop in Trieste at 7am on Saturday, I went straight to Garching to set up the scene for our 2017 Garching Open Day event starting at 11am. After getting home at 10pm I got started on the final preparations for Sunday’s 2017 Fotohalbmarathon. But one after the other …

Once again, and thanks to a great team, we had an exemplary Open Day event on Saturday … ATLAS live-info screens and posters, a button machine, a BYOPD competition, a large ATLAS LEGO model, short-film screenings throughout the day, a screening of “BBC Horizon – Inside CERN” in the evening, and several hundred people passing by (47 participants in the BYOPD competition) and chatting/discussing with us. The final QnA after the movie took longer than the movie itself :)

On Sunday I organised the ninth (my fifth) edition of our little version of a photo marathon, called Fotohalbmarathon. This year’s twelve topics followed the theme ‘Urban Globetrotter‘.

For both events the juries are still busy working out the best contributions ;)
