timekeeper v3

Ever had an issue with people not sticking to their allocated presentation time at one of your events? I certainly do …

After another round of testing at our MQV Annual Meeting in Eichstätt in October, I put together a new version of my little timekeeping tool available at timekeeper.mehlhase.info.

I usually have it running on a Raspberry Pi using Chromium in kiosk mode and use chroma keying on an ATEM Mini Pro to overlay the presentation source with the timer display, all controlled by a tiny five-keys ‘keyboard’. But it’s a Progressive Web App, so you can install it locally on your PC, tablet or phone and hook that up your video mixer via HDMI.

IEEE Quantum Week in Albuquerque

Last week, I was at the 2025 IEEE Quantum Week in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to once again represent Munich Quantum Valley (MQV) with a special focus on its quantum-software activities and the Munich Quantum Software Stack (MQSS).

I also had the opportunity to fly on an Airbus A380 for the first time. Unfortunately, I missed my connecting flight on the way back, so I had to spend an extra night near Denver and wait another two days for my checked luggage to arrive.

What a week – AFQC, WoQ, Laurent and more

Even within the Year of Quantum Science and Technology, which is packed with public engagement (find them here) and scientific events related to quantum science, this week was special.

After weeks and months of preparation and coordination, the World of QUANTUM finally took place at Messe München from Tuesday to Friday (link to our wrap-up piece will follow). Additionally, Munich Quantum Valley hosted this year’s AFQC on Monday, organised jointly with the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (link to our wrap-up piece will follow).

Apart from these major events and efforts, there were a few more smaller events, parties and meet-ups to attend this week, all crowned by a little-big yet also exhausting treat on Friday night: Laurent Garnier at the Blitz Club.

Canoeing on the Regen

This week, we went canoeing on the Regen river. We started at the Blaibach reservoir, which is located at kilometre 107, and paddled all the way to the Danube junction in Regensburg.

Spread over five days, we covered around 20 kilometres a day, totalling 107 kilometres, and spent the night in Cham, Roding, Nittenau and Ramspau (Regenstauf). We got the four-person canoe from Zankl and enjoyed four wonderful stays at the Hotel am Regenbogen, the Gasthof Hecht, the Campingplatz Nittenau and the Ramspauer Hof, respectively.

While it wasn’t exactly relaxing, being surrounded by nature and staying in nice places with good food at the end of the day made it a very enjoyable experience overall.

You can find some pictures and a map showing the route, places where we got or could have gotten off, and more below.
